HMAS wants your contributions!

What can you do (besides joining HMAS, of course!) ?

As a fan, you can you can become a regular or occasional contributor of articles and book reviews, assist with production, i.e. typing and proofreading, and finally, spread the word about HMAS to other individuals, groups, and bulletin boards who might be interested.

Authors in the genre can contribute short pieces about yourself and your work. You can also let me know if you would be willing to make yourself available for interviews.

Publishers, editors, publicists or agents can send HMAS catalogs, books, or galleys for book previews, publicity material for background information in articles, and reading group outlines.

FAQs on Contributions

1) What can one review?
ANY historical mystery or historical novel, set in any place or time, written by any author. Many novels involve past crimes or use time travel. If you are unsure, review it. Chances are it will be editorially appropriate. For ideas, visit Sue Feder's Magical Mystery Tour. With over 900 book reviews, it will fire up your ideas.

2) When can one review?
ALWAYS. Any time. Now. Tomorrow.

3) What if someone else has reviewed the same book?
I encourage multiple reviews of the same book, since there are many different ways to approach any particular book, and many different reactions to it.

4) What information is required in a book review?
The name of the book. The name of the author. The name of the publisher. The date of publication. A brief plot synopsis that doesn't give away too much. Your feelings about the book, supported by specifics.

5) Are there any special things I should do when writing a review?
Quote passages accurately (page numbers are not necessary). Double-check the spellings of all person and place names. Double-check your facts. Identify any particular interests you may have, such as a personal relationship with the writer; training in the subject under discussion; anything that might suggest a bias one way or the other. Contact me if you have any concerns.

6) What if I can't deliver the promised review?
If you have made a commitment to review a book I have sent you, send the book back to me so someone else can have a go at it. If you are reviewing a book from your own collection, simply let me know.

7) What format can I use to submit reviews and articles?
Submissions are in order of preference:
  • E-mail
  • Text files attached to E-mail (ASCII, Microsoft Works or Word, or Lotus' WordPro)
  • Disk in ASCII, Microsoft Works or Word, or Lotus' WordPro
  • Computer printed or typed with double-spacing
  • Hand printed
  • Hand written with proper names printed
When you send hardcopy letters, reviews, articles, etc., please print your name on every sheet of paper, and print your address on at least one sheet.

8) What about advertising?
I will accept advertising. The Bulletin Board area will be for people who are looking to buy, sell or trade. Buying and trading will be free, in limited numbers of titles, and as space permits. Selling limited numbers of titles can be done for a nominal fee. Booksellers interested in running full page inserts can contact me for pricing.

9) Have you considered pen-pals?
If you are interested in pen pals, I will include a Pen Pal section as a public service.
